Abstract
This research looks at the exercise and food ingestion patterns of housewives from the Jinju and Gimhae areas. The research method we use in this thesis is as follows: first, a survey was conducted among mothers of 400 elementary school students during the period of Feb. 3 through Feb. 10, 2003. Second, for 8 weeks after the survey, 20 volunteers were instructed to exercise 4 times or more per week, while 20 volunteers took a nutrition education class once a week. Then the data was analyzed using frequency, t-test and ANOVA using SAS 8.1. This study shows the following results. 1. As for the food ingestion patterns, the average was a high of 4.00 in the case of the underweight group. In other words, a better food ingestion pattern was shown by the underweight group than by the overweight group. There was a significant statistical difference between the food ingestion pattern and BMI. 2. As far as exercise is concerned, the average was a high of 3.38 in the overweight group and a low of 2.66 in the underweight group. Again a significant statistical difference was found between the exercise and BMI. 3. The influence of exercise and diet on weight control could be found as followed: First, there was a significant difference in weight among the exercise, diet, and control groups. Second, there was a significant differential in BMI among the three groups. The exercise group had the highest difference. After exercise, BMI decreased by 0.88. Thirds, there was a significant difference in the ratio of waist and hip circumferences among three groups. The exercise group had the highest ratio reduction level. ¡¯ Fourth, systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels showed no significant differences among the exercise, diet and control groups. Fifth, there was a significant difference in TG(Triglyceride), T-C(total cholesterol) and HDL-C(high density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels among the groups. Sixth, there was a significant difference in FBS(fasting blood sugar) level among the exercise, diet and control groups. The diet group had the highest difference in FBS. After the dietary education, FBS decreased by an average of 9.21. The results of this study show that both exercise and diet have a positive influence on weight control among today¡¯s housewives. They should, therefore, have access to accurate information regarding the positive influence of regular exercise and appropriate diet on weight control. It will help them control their weight, reduce adult diseases, and ultimately gain better health.
